Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Sandy Relief for the Animals in NY

As you all know, Superstorm Sandy caused major damage along the east coast. Most of us in the DC area were very lucky; our friends to the north were not. New York was hit particularly hard. Much like in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people and pets are displaced.

AFH is taking action to help the victims of the storm.

On Saturday, November 17th we are sending a van full of supplies to a Long Island animal shelter. We desperately need your help to fill the van with supplies! Here is a list of the items the shelter has identified as their most pressing needs:

  • Dog food (wet/dry)
  • Cat food (wet/dry)
  • Litter pans
  • Litter
  • Newspapers
  • Leashes
  • Collars
  • Sheets
  • Blankets
  • Towels
  • Kuranda beds
  • Crates (all sizes)
  • Pet carriers (all sizes)
  • Gift cards (Petco, Petsmart, Target, Walmart)
  • Dog beds/cat beds
  • Portable heaters
  • Cages (all sizes)

If you would like to drop off a donation, our van is at a private home in Gainesville, Virginia. Please email pattistinson13@gmail.com for the address.

Rather than (or in addition to) donating items from the above list, please consider a cash donation, which we will use to purchase the supplies for the shelter. You can make a cash donation by clicking this link:

If you'd prefer to mail a check, please send it to the following address:

Donations are tax deductible.

In order to make this trip a reality, we need to move as quickly as possible. Please don't hesitate! As with any emergency response effort, we need to plan, prepare, and pack; coordinate drivers, make arrangements for shelter staff to meet us the list goes on & on! It would be very helpful if we could receive all donations whether supplies or cash no later than Thursday, November 15th. Your response to Hurricane Katrina was fast and powerful. We hope that you are able to respond to this new emergency situation with the same urgency and generosity you demonstrated then.

If you would like to ride to New York, please email pattistinson13@gmail.com. Likewise, if we are able to fill two vans, we will need two more volunteers to make the trip.

The van(s) will leave on Saturday morning, November 17th and return late the same day.

As always, your help and generosity are appreciated! As we move into the Holiday season, remember those who are less fortunate and give what you can.

Thanks for your help,

A Forever Home Rescue Foundation
