Centreville Goes on Goal Frenzy Against Jaguars

Kehl's four goals lead Wildcats to victory over Falls Church, 14-6

When the inclement weather passed on Monday night finally allowing the boys lacrosse game between Falls Church Jaguars and Centreville Wildcats to begin, the Jaguars thought they were done dealing with the lightning.

Then they met Centreville's Shane Kehl.

Kehl scored four goals, including three in the span of 67 seconds, leading the Wildcats to a 14-6 victory.

The 67-second scoring spree put Centreville ahead 7-1 with 7:16 remaining in the first half, and Zach Sikora followed with a hat trick of his own and looked to be in the right place at the right time all night.

β€œI like to have fun in practice with my teammates, and it carries over onto the field during games,” Kehl said. β€œA lot of us have played together when we were younger, so I think we have the chemistry to beat teams [from other districts]. It will be tough, but I think we should pull a couple off at least.”

The chemistry showed on defense as well for the Wildcats, as Pat Prosser minded the net with six great stick saves in the opening half. He allowed just two goals before being removed for the backup keeper in the fourth quarter.

Sikora won the opening face-off, took it straight down the middle of the field and slung the first score in the net within 10 seconds. It would not get any better for the Jaguars as five different Wildcats would score goals in the first half. The majority of the first two quarters was spent in Jaguar territory as one goal after another slipped past the Falls Church keeper.

Yet leading 10-1, the Wildcats looked complacent and let off the accelerator in the second half as sloppy passing and penalties put them into man-down situations repeatedly. Falls Church took advantage and threatened to mount a comeback as the team found its spark behind five second-half goals.Β

β€œWe let up and let them back in the game and it’s frustrating from a coaching standpoint. It’s tough to remain focused when you are up ten to nothing at halftime,” Centreville Coach Jed Williams said. β€œThey beat us on a bunch of groundballs and they outscored us in the second half by a goal. We had a lot of penalties killed us tonight. But we have the best player in the region [Sikora], and we have to maximize the good things we do and minimize the mistakes.”

Royer Rodriguez and Matt Evans did a nice job poke checking and winning groundballs to swing the momentum quickly to the Jaguars, sending deep outlet passes to Kyle Jackson on offense.

Wildcat Sam marks assisted on several big plays and scores for his teammates and said he likes how his team has performed so far this year.

β€œWe just try to keep a solid defense and keep on our men, run our system and hopefully stop them, β€œ Marks said. β€œWe’ve started out the season well and we definitely have a lot of potential. Once we get into Concorde districts it is always tough but we will stick with it and see what happens.”

Centreville next plays at Mount Vernon on March 26.
