Centreville High School Sports: Week in Review

A look at last week's sports scores.

Girls Tennis—The Wildcats won their opening match against Concorde District opponent Herndon 8-1 on March 22nd.  Jackie Lin lost a tough match to Kendall Beltran, 2-10; in the following game, Cheryl Mazmanian won 10-4. Christina Park won by a score of 10-3, and Sarah Nguyen handily won her  match 10-0. Shauna Kistner found her way into the top 6 for the first time, winning the fifth match 10-3, while Astrid Unson won her match at #6, 10-1. 

In doubles, Lin/Park won 10-4, at #2 Mazmanian/Nguyen won 10-0, and lastly at #3 Unson/Ali Dyer won 10-4.

The girls tennis team continued their winning streak on Thursday, March 24th, beating rival Chantilly, 6-3. Jackie Lin, #1 singles, won a tough match 11-9; #2 singles Cheryl Mazmanian won her match, 10-5; #3 singles Christina Park lost by a break 8-10. They were on serve throughout the match.

Sarah Nguyen, #4 singles, won handily 10-1; #5 singles Shauna Kistner lost a tough match 6-10; and #6 singles Astrid Unson won 10-8, coming from behind 3-5, in a hard-fought match.  

In doubles, #1 doubles Lin/Ali Dyer (subbing for Christina Park) lost 2-8, #2 doubles Mazmanian/Nguyen won #10-4, #3 doubles Kistner/Unson won 10-3.

The Lady Wildcats next travel to Oakton on Tuesday, March 29th at 3:30 p.m. 

Girls Lacrosse: The  Girls Lacrosse Team kicked off their season with two decisive wins. The season opener was a 16 – 3 win over the visiting Fairfax Rebels. Hayley Anderson led the Wildcats with five goals and three assists, along with Carly Sane who scored four goals and one assist. Defensively, Mackenzie Johnson and Shannon O’Donnell paced the Wildcats. Two seniors stepped onto the field for their first lacrosse season and greatly enhanced the defensive end—Taylor O’Hara and Erin Meador. Goalie Taylor Marrow finished the game with 8 saves.

The Wildcats then traveled and won 21 – 3 over their host, the Falls Church Jaquars. Leading the offense were Sane with 6 goals and 2 assists, and Anderson with four goals and four assists. Flo Duong recorded nine ground balls to help maintain the Wildcats' possession over most of the game. Johnson and O’Donnell held tight defensively, each recording three turnovers and an interception.  Sophomore Marrow in the goal held strong with 10 saves. The Lady Wildcats will travel to South County High School on Tuesday, March 29th, for their next game.  

Boys Varsity Lacrosse: Centreville High School Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse team on March 22nd, beating the Jaguars 14-6.  Junior Zack Sikora led the team with four goals, followed by Senior Shane Kehl with three.  

Other Wildcats contributing goals included Andy Balberde with two; Nathan Marks, Austin Erickson, Tyler Vennergrund, Sam Marks and Daniel Son each with one goal. Sam Marks, Zack Sikora, Austin Erickson, Nathan Marks and Zach Fenstermacher helped out with assists. CVHS Varsity goalie, Pat Prosser, led the Wildcat’s defensive effort, with solid assistance from defenders Kevin Brawner, Zach Fenstermacher, Jake Hyde and Nick Ziegler. 

The Wildcats continued to improve their record this past Saturday, March 26, with two additional wins in the Mount Vernon High School Lacrosse Tournament, emerging as Tournament Champion.  In the first game, a very competitive and physical one, the Wildcats defeated South Lakes High School 9-6. Austin Erickson, Shane Kehl, Zack Sikora and Andy Balberde each had two goals and Nathan Marks had one goal.  

Sam Marks had two assists; Shane Kehl, Zack Sikora and Andy Balberde with one assist each. Goalie Pat Prosser had an impressive 24 saves and received extra defensive help from Seniors Zach Fenstermacher and Stephen Pugh, and Junior Kevin Brawner. With just over an hour to rest between games, the Wildcats went on to defeat the host team, Mount Vernon High School, 17-1.  

In this game, Nathan Marks and Zack Sikora led the Wildcats with three goals each; Shane Kehl, Andy Balberde, Austin Erickson, Tyler Vennergrund and Daniel Son each had two goals. Logan Wakefield had one goal. Assists were recorded by Zack Sikora and Andy Balberde with three each; Shane Kehl with two assists; and Sam Marks, John Horoho, Nathan Marks and Tyler Vennergrund with one assist each. Defenders Antonio Choi, Jake Hyde, Kevin Brawner and Stephen Fairbrother kept the Majors' scoring efforts to one goal. The team record now stands at four wins and zero losses.   

Boys JV Lacrosse: The Centreville High School JV Boys Lacrosse team continued their winning streak, trouncing the Falls Church Jaguars 23-1 on March 22nd.

Eleven players scored for the Wildcats: Chase Heiner, Daniel Ruelle, Danny Meador, Kevin Hagan, Andrew Belloli, Sean Doyle, Connor Mitchell, John Daniel, Elliot Cunningham, Kevin Grimm and Kyle Roarty. Sean Doyle and Colin Reynolds led the team in ground balls with five ground balls each.  

Later in the week, the JV team kept the streak alive with another win, this time over the Mount Vernon Majors on March 26th.  The Wildcats scored 20 unanswered points, with 12 Wildcat players participating in the scoring drive. The leading scorers were Danny Meador with four goals and Kevin Hagan and Andy Reilly had three goals.  Midfielder Sean Doyle led the Wildcats with seven ground balls. 

Girls Soccer:  The team was recently ranked sixth in the Washington Post's recent poll for the regional DC area, and lived up to that ranking last week. The team won its district opener, 1 - 0, over the Oakton Lady Cougars in a hard fought contest. Isabel Chang scored on a penalty kick in the second half to give the Lady Wildcats the winning goal. Goalie Taylor Avery had two saves for the game.  

The Lady Wildcats had their first home game against McLean High School on March 25. The girls scored first when Danielle Dull found the back of the net from a full twenty yards out. The Highlanders came back to score, to tie the match at one apiece. With minutes left in the second half, Mari Marotta scored to give Centreville the win (assist by Sarah Karlik). Keeper Taylor Avery had two saves, and keeper Tori Collar had one save for the game.  The Lady Wildcats host Robinson High School tonight, March 28. 

Boys Varsity and JV Soccer:  The CVHS Boys Varsity Soccer team kicked off their season with a 2-1-1 record in the first two weeks. Following a win over South County on March 14th, the Wildcats celebrated a victory over visiting Annandale Atoms by a score of 3-2.  Goals were scored by Tyler Lawrence, Luis Navarro and Connor Coward, with assists from Jake Straub and Connor Coward. The JV Squad tied the JV Atoms, 1-1. Following a loss to Oakton, the boys tied host McLean on March 23rd, 5-5.  Connor Coward led the team with five goals scored.  Junior Varsity won against McLean, 2-0.
