Centreville Shuts Down West Potomac Wolverines

Wildcats win 49-10.

During the fourth quarter of Saturday's game against West Potomac, Centreville senior Connor Coward intercepted the football and charged 99 yards across the field, cementing his team's already formidable lead over the Wolverines and setting a new Wildcat record in the process.

"I was just thinking, 'please don't get caught, please don't get caught,'" #23 Coward—who also ran 61 yards for another touchdown—said after the game.

"I didn't even know it was a record until I heard it on the field." Watch the play in the video above.

"He's just a super athlete and not many kids can go 100 yards against their athletes and not get run down," head coach Chris Haddock said of Coward's "backbreaker" play.

Centreville overcame a somewhat tepid 14-10 lead in the first half of the game, to demolish their opponents in the second, pulling a 49-10 win over the Wolverines. The Wildcats, who also had standout plays from players including Manny Smith, Ken Ekanem, Mitch Ferrick and Chase Walter, are now 2-0 for the season. Ekanem helped lead the way to a strong second half by picking up a fumbled ball in the third quarter and running 30 yards.

"The way that we came out in the second half and ran really set up some plays for later in the game," Haddock said. "But I guess the biggest thing that I'm happy with is our defensive effort. Our defense has played extremely well against two, in my opinion, high-powered offenses. This team put 51 points up on the board last week and we shut 'em down to ten. That's pretty good defense."

Fairfax County Public Schools would not allow games on Centreville's grass field due to the rain, so the Wildcats played at Westfield High School—one of three at the school today (Westfield and Chantilly were also scheduled to play Saturday). The Wildcats will next play Mount Vernon on Sept. 23rd.
