Centreville Voters Favor Incumbents in 2011 Elections

Local voters re-elect incumbents in Centreville area races.

Tuesday was a good night for local incumbents as Centreville voters re-elected many of their officials to additional terms on the county school board, board of supervisors, house of delegates and state senate. 

, a Democrat, won with 58.95 percent of the vote against Republican challenger . This is Petersen's second term in the senate seat. Centreville voters are new to the 34th district, due to redistricting earlier in the year. 

"That was the biggest challenge," Petersen said as the results came in at the Democratic election party at the Waterford Fair Oaks Tuesday night. Some of the Centreville-area precincts, such as Deer Park, Stone North, Poplar Tree and Rocky Run, went for Culipher.

Petersen , who also won a clear victory over his challenger, Brian Schoeneman. And over at the Waterford, the mood remained jubilent, as Democrats celebrated a large number of victories at the local level. 

"It's a good night for the Democratic Party in Fairfax County. Fairfax is steady. People are voting the Democratic ballot," Congressman Gerry Connolly told Patch. "That is good news for Tim Kaine and Barack Obama and me in 2012."

But Centreville area voters also re-elected several popular Republican incumbents: ,  and 40th district delegate Tim Hugo (who won with about 74 percent of the vote against an independent challenger, Dianne Blais). 

Highlights from other elections:

  • Sully District: . 
  • Fairfax County Sheriff: Stan Barry, a Democrat, won with 54.4 percent of the vote against challenger Bill Cooper. 
  • Board of Supervisors Chairman: Incumbent Sharon Bulova was re-elected with 59.4 percent of the vote against Republican Spike Williams.
  • At-large school board race:
  • State senate: David Marsden won re-election with 53.64 percent of the vote against Jason Flanary, a Centreville businessman. 
  • Commonwealth's attorney: incumbent Ray Murrogh ran unopposed and won with 150,067 votes.
