Key to Awesomeness: ’s FBLA chapter mixes business and education in creative ways.

Bryan Buser, who teaches Web Page Development and Design, Multimedia, and Web Technologies at CVHS, is the club’s faculty sponsor. “FBLA operates under the idea of five different dimensions,” he said, “They are promotion, social, service, business skills and knowledge, and financial activities.”

The CVHS chapter has been active since the school opened in 1988 and currently has 133 members in grades 9-12. The club meets several times each month and participates in activities including fundraising events, the Adopt a Highway program, an etiquette dinner, and workshops such as ‘Business Group Dynamics’ and ‘Investing in the Stock Market’.

On March 9th several students from the CVHS chapter participated in the Northern Virginia FBLA Spring Regional Conference, which featured competitive test and skill events in over 60 categories. Individual, team, and chapter events were offered and judged by business professionals who work in the Northern Virginia area.

More than 30 high schools from Arlington and Fairfax Counties and the City of Alexandria competed at Regionals, but only the top three finishers in each event earned medals.

During competition Buser encourages his students to “try to do well, but to make the experience a learning one as well as positive.” In the Website Development category, Buser’s students have placed in the top 3 for the last five years in a row.

The following Centreville High School students were awarded medals last week:

  • Senior Sarah Hollenbeck, 2nd place, Business Communication
  • Seniors Ranjana Addanki and Abhishek Ramanan and Junior Praveen Mohanraju, 3rd place, Business Plan
  • Junior Garrett Leavitt, 2nd place, Impromptu Speaking
  • Seniors Sabal Arora and Sahid Bangura, 2nd place, Website Development

Sarah Hollenbeck will advance to the Virginia FBLA State Leadership Conference on April 8-9 in Reston.

“We are proud of everyone who competed and very happy and excited for those who placed,” Buser said.
