Historic Plantation an Idyllic Getaway

National Trust Historic Site offers recreational and educational activities in a nostalgic setting.

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Leesburg, Virginia countryside lays Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, a 360-acre eighteenth century plantation property now home to some of the area’s most beautiful gardens and exciting social events.

Oatlands offers something for everyone. Visitors can tour the estate’s circa 1804 mansion, explore the four and a half acre terraced garden, enjoy an old-fashioned afternoon tea, or watch a heritage baseball game.

“The list goes on and on for ways to enjoy Oatlands,” said Executive Director , “Many come here to walk and relax and take in the beautiful plants, flowers, and trees that change every day. We have families that bring their young kids for a place to run around, to have a picnic on our tables below the trees, to enjoy the wildlife.”

First Saturday Plantation Tours

This spring and summer Oatlands is offering guided walking tours of its plantation grounds. “This tour is an excellent way to start learning about life in Loudoun County in the 1800s, as we begin to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War,” McGimsey said.

The next tours will be held this Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, and $7 for students aged 6-16. The additional cost of a plantation tour is $5 when combined with a mansion tour. The outdoor tour covers some uneven terrain including steep stairs and hills, so sensible footwear is recommended.

Jazz & Juleps Spring Fundraiser

A cocktail party will be held on the Oatlands mansion front lawn on Sunday, May 15, with live jazz music, a hors d’oeuvres and silent auction. Many of the goods and services available at the auction were donated by local businesses. Tickets to the fundraiser, sponsored by The History Channel, Capital Party Rentals, and RSVP Catering, are $100 per person. Proceeds support a number of Oatlands projects, including the junior curator summer camp series and preservation of the country’s second-oldest greenhouse.

Afternoon Teas

Traditional afternoon teas are held at Oatlands throughout the year. Fancy tea sandwiches, scones with preserves and cream, and a special Oatlands tea blend are served. Spring and summer teas will be at 1 p.m. on May 7-8 (special Mother’s Day Teas), May 22, June 26, July 31 (Tea with Artists Day), and August 28. The cost of tea for all guests over the age of 3 is $24.95 plus tax. Call 703-777-3174 for reservations.
