One-Year Sentence for Rapist's Immigration Violation
Salvador Portillo Saravia, who is already serving a 25-year sentence for raping a child, was sentenced Friday to a year in prison for illegally re-entering the country.
Salvador Portillo Saravia, who is already serving a hefty prison sentence for raping an 8-year-old Centreville girl, was sentenced to an additional year on immigration charges.
On Friday, United States District Judge Claude Hilton sentenced Portillo Saravia, who in July pleaded guilty to the charge of illegally reentering the U.S. after being deported. Portillo Saravia is a native of El Salvador and authorities say he is also a member of the MS-13 street gang.
Portillo Saravia, now 30, raped the 9-year-old girl around shortly after Christmas 2010, authorities said. He then fled to Texas, where he was captured in February 2011.
A Washington Post article showed that Portillo Saravia should have been caught after being charged with a lesser crime in Loudoun County shortly before the rape. The article demonstrated that Secure Communities, a federal database that tracks deported immigrants, had some shortcomings. The case inspired legislators to grant additional funding for the database.
