VT Selects Matthew Davis of Centreville as McNair Scholar

Program will help prepare Davis for doctoral studies.

Virginia Tech has selected Matthew Davis of Centreville, a junior majoring in industrial and systems engineering in the College of Engineering, as a McNair Scholar.

The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program helps prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies. VT selected 15 students to participate in the selective program. During the school year, Davis and other scholars will research and visit graduate universities, and participate in workshops and other activities that will help them eventually move on to graduate school. During the summer, Davis will receive a stipend to participate in a summer program and conduct research.

The program is named after Ronald Erwin McNair, one of the nation's first black astronauts, who died aboard the Challenger space shuttle when it exploded in 1986 at lift-off.
