Centreville Day is Almost Here!

Centreville Day is Saturday October 19, 2013! Join us at 9 am for the Zombie Slouch Fun Run. At 10 am DJ Myra Flemister will start the event, opening ceremonies at 10:30, parade at noon, and the fun doesn’t stop until 5 pm.

 

Centreville Day is located in Historic Centreville Park in the Centreville Historic District at 5714 Mt. Gilead Road, Centreville VA 20120.  Admission to the event is free, free remote parking and shuttles are provided. Remote parking is located at the Trinity Centre at 5860 Trinity Parkway. , Shuttle buses provided by Centreville Baptist Church. This event is organized by the Friends of Historic Centreville in partnership with the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Centreville Day Planning Committee. Proceeds benefit the park and historic preservation and education in western Fairfax. More information can be found at www.centrevilleva.org.

SHOPPING

Start your holiday shopping early with handmade crafts ranging from specialty items such as nursing wear, traditional wood crafts, jewelry, and sewing crafts such as American Doll clothes and Many  businesses will be there to help you remodel your house (or find a new one), take care of your health, and improve your finances.

 

 

A great food court features local restaurants and festival fare including: dumplings from Food Is Good, street tacos from Coyote Grill, a variety of tasty barbecue items from Smokes BBQ, funnel cake, hot dogs, and hamburgers, from Mrs. P’s Concessions, and always a favorite with the kids, chicken sandwiches from Chick-Fil-A, Tinsley’s Novelty Drinks will be selling hot gourmet coffees and   fruit smoothies, and snacks including fried fudgy pies and fried Oreos.  

 

5K RUN

Be a ghoul for good! The 5k Zombie Slouch Fun Run returns for its second year. The race is organized by and benefits the DC Metro Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation which helps families with children diagnosed with cancer. This family and pet-friendly fun run and walk also includes a prize for the most creative costumes. The race begins at 9 am on Centreville Day at Saint John’s Episcopal Church on Mt. Gilead Road. Registration is $25 for runners, $20 for walkers, and $60 for families. See the the Centreville Day or DC Candlelighters Foundation website to register.

 

 

PARADE

Everyone is welcome to join the American Legion Parade, organized and overseen by the veterans of Post 1995. A Centreville Day tradition for 21 years, the start time and route for the parade are new this year: the parade will march along the entire length of Wharton Lane and  pass by the stage at about noon. Prizes will be awarded for the Most Patriotic and Most Enthusiastic groups. Feel free to wear your favorite Halloween or historical costume or  line the parade route and cheer on parade participants. There is still time to join the parade. Registration is requested, but there are no fees. OPENING CEREMONIES & ENTERTAINMENT

Opening ceremonies will commence at 10:30 am. DJ Myra Flemister will lead a line-up of local talent including:

Creative Dance Theatre at 11 am

Dawn King’s Not Just Dance at 11:30

The Alliance Theatre at 12:30

Centreville Dance at 1:00

Stephen Morton’s No Va Washu Academy at 1:30

DJ Myra will move the crowd at 2:00

Harmony Road Music at 2:45Hallelujah Mission Tae Kwon Do at 3:15

 

Additional performances are expected to be added to fill the late afternoon.

 

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES

Centreville Day has an abundance of fun activities for children and many are free. Gold Sponsor G & C Tire & Auto is again providing wristbands for free children’s rides. This year there’s a climbing wall for older children and a Fire Truck moon bounce for the younger set.

 

Put on your costume and follow the Trick or Treat trail through the Historic District and Marketplace. Be sure to stop at Virginia Heritage Bank to pick up a bag to carry treats in. The Korean Presbyterian Church will continue its cotton candy tradition. Lots of other sponsors and vendors are participating, just look for the pumpkin sign and don’t forget to stop at the information booth, Mount Gilead, the Old Stone Church, and the Spindle Sears House.

 

Miss Charlotte and the other ladies of Alpha Delta Kappa Children’s Area will be back this year with their Faces of Centreville contest, and old-fashioned activities such as tug of war, sack races, making pot holders, knitting and reading stories. They will also be giving away gently used children’s books while supplies last. Also look for face painting.

 

Next to the Spindle Sears House, the N-Zone Fun Zone will  be filled with corn hole games, ladder ball, Jenga, Legos, a water duck game, craft activities, coloring and, of course, balloons. Centreville Preschool Inc., on Braddock Road, will also have children’s activities at the school..

 

PET ADOPTION                                                                                                              

Find your fur-ever friend at Centreville Day this year. The Friends of Homeless Animals will be holding a pet adoption under the trees between the Spindle Sears House and the food court near the N-Zone Fun Zone.

HISTORICAL ACTIVITIES

Three new historical signs will be dedicated at the Newgate Tavern site on Braddock Road in the afternoon.  Time and further details will be available at the Centreville Day website.

 

Take a ride on the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Mini History Train and discover Centreville’s Historic District. The guided ride will travel between “stations” at Mount Gilead and the Old Stone Church. Tickets are only $3.00. A van tour of Civil War Centreville for ages 12 years and up will start from Ellanor C. Lawrence Park at 1 pm. The tour includes the Stuart-Mosby Museum, Mount Gilead and the Centreville Civil War fortifications.  Register for the van tour at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/ecl. If you prefer a walking tour, Ghost Tours will be meeting at the Spindle Sears House. These not-so-scary tours examine the stories of ghosts, murder, and lost love. Check the Centreville Day website or stop by the information booth for further details.

 

On the Mount Gilead lawn, discover tightrope-walker extraordinaire Jody Evans! There will also be plenty of  hands-on activities including candle-dipping and making your own quill pens and walnut ink. The Swordmasters of the 18th Century will offer fencing lessons for those bold enough to try.  Mount Gilead will be open for tours and Mildred DeBell will be on hand with some of her amazing collection of historical memorabilia.

 

On Braddock Road, the Old Stone Church and the Stuart-Mosby Cavalry Museum will be open for tours. Enjoy a Ploughman’s Lunch or purchase baked treats at the church and an informative chat with the knowledgeable docents at the Stuart-Mosby Museum.
