7 Reasons to Embrace the Cicada Swarmageddon

Nature Conservancy entomologist blogs about the reasons to celebrate the phenomenon.

Our newest bloggers at The Nature Conservancy posted this morning on a subject that we'll all know a little something about in the coming weeks: the cicada invasion.

Sometime soon, very soon, thousands of small periodic cicada nymphs will be pushing their way up out of the ground across the East Coast, taking over our cities, our homes and our lives in a style befitting Alfred Hitchcock. Dogs will be eating them, kids will be racing them and drivers will quickly (or, perhaps, never) become accustomed to the crunch under their wheels.

Entomologist Deborah Landau writes about seven reasons to embrace the phenomenon, including their familiar sound reminding us that summer's on the way and the cicada's role as a food source in our ecosystem for birds and raccoons.
