A Hero's Welcome for World War II Veterans

One hundred veterans from the Chicago area visited the World War II memorial in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. Local Girl Scouts were among those who greeted them at the airport.

Centreville Girls Scout Ambassadors (Troop #3663) welcomed 100 World War II Veterans to as they made their way home on Wednesday from a trip to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The veterans traveled with Honor Flight Chicago, a non-profit organization created to recognize America's veterans with a day of honor, rememberance and and celebration. The veterans, all in their 90s, started their day trip at 4:30 a.m. in Chicago. 

As the veterans arrived at the Southwest gate at to return home after a long day, the Girl Scouts, all rising juniors from , were there to applaud them, shake their hands and tell them "thank-you" for your service (the writer's daughter is a member of the troop). The girls enjoyed getting them coffee, taking their trash from dinner, and talking to them. They also baked cookies and brownies for the veterans and made signs showing their appreciation.
