Centreville Day 2012 Guide

This Saturday, Oct. 20 is the 20th annual Centreville Day, celebrating 220 years of Centreville history.

Centreville Day will feature a crafts marketplace, local businesses and community group booths, living history and historic tours, entertainment and plenty of fun for kids, including rides and activities.

For the first time this year, Centreville Day will include a 5K fun fun benefitting the DC Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Centreville Day is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.

Centreville Day is based in the Centreville Historic District, which is bordered by Route 29, I-66, Route 28 and Pickwick Road.

Admission to Centreville Day is free! Still, you’ll want to bring some money for a few of the children’s rides, crafts, food and more. It’s on rain or shine—fortunately, Saturday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s.

Transportation and Parking

There is free parking for Centreville Day at 5860 Trinity Parkway. Free shuttles (courtesy of Centreville Baptist Church) will take attendees from the parking lot to the event starting at 9:45 a.m. The Centreville Historic District will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event, and for a short time before and after. Handicap parking will be available at the Church of Christ starting at 10:30 a.m.

Food

There will be no shortage of food at Centreville Day, including samplings from area restaurants, fun festival foods (like fried dough) and a central food court with food from Chick-fil-A, Smokes BBQ, Coyote Grille and others.

5K Zombie Slouch Fun Run (9 a.m.)

This is the first 5K Zombie Slouch Fun Run on Centreville Day. The race starts at 9 a.m. (8 a.m. check-in) at Colin Powell Elementary School, 13340 Leland Road.

The run benefits the DC Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation.

There will be prizes for most creative costumes in several categories. Dogs and strollers are welcome!

Centreville Day Parade (9:30 a.m.)

American Legion Post #1995 is organizing the Centreville Day Parade this year, featuring costumed groups, pets and more. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m.

Children’s Activities

There is more than enough to keep children occupied (and make them tired!) at Centreville Day this year. Here are few highlights:

Throughout the day there are free crafts and activities for kids, including face painting (from The Fairfax County Department of Foster Care and Adoption), a clown from 2 – 4 p.m. (from Big Apple Circus-Circus to Go!) and more. Booths and activities are sponsored by Clay Café Studio, Girl Scouts Troop 4260, Herndon Council of the Arts, Score!, Sully Historic District and others.

Kids can make their own music with Little Hands Kinder Music. While there, parents can enter a drawing for the Alec T. Monroe Kinder Music Scholarship.

Several church-based and community groups have activities for children in the Marketplace.

St. John’s Church features public safety vehicles, including firetrucks. Colonial children’s games will be set up on the Mount Gilead House lawn.

There is also a historic scavenger hunt for kids that takes families to several historic sites in the area.

At 12:30 p.m., the Good Knights nonprofit group will use fairytales to teach children and parents about childhood safety. The presentation is at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Tips

You can get a ticket for a free ride in the G&C Children’s Ride Area by stopping by G&C Auto on your way to Centreville Day.
