Time for an earlier school start date? Del. Jim LeMunyon (R-67th district) is continuing to push for a i.e. the mandate that schools in Virginia start after Labor Day. 

"The cost of keeping schools open in Virginia is nearly $50 million per day, when both the state and local funding contributions are considered. We can't afford to underutilize, or more accurately, squander more than $500 million of tax money each year by keeping children in school for weeks after testing is completed," LeMunyon wrote in The Virginian-Pilot

Fairfax County Public Schools to set its own start date, but waivers from the law are rare. The tourism industry backs a later start date because it allows families one more week to visit attractions. Many teens are also able to work one final week before school starts.

Jury: Fire & Rescue Dept. failed to stop sexual harassment. A former Fairfax County firefighter has won her lawsuit against the Fire and Rescue Department, the Fairfax County Times reports.  A jury in Alexandria ruled that the department knew about the situation and did not take effective action to stop it. The Times notes that the department is facing additional claims of sexual harassment in court this month, as Stacey Bailey, another former firefighter sues for $6 million.

Today is Flag Day...What's Flag Day? Manassas Park Patch explains a little bit about the history of the summer's most overlooked and undercelebrated patriotic holiday. The holiday isn't typically marked by mass celebrations and barbeques, but as VFW Post 7589 Commander Ron Link notes, Flag Day carries particular significance for every veteran. “The flag is something that every vet carries in his heart into combat,” Link says. “It’s what we believe in and fight for during every battle.”
