In Wake of Navy Yard Shooting: Nats Game Canceled, Heightened Security at Bases, Trains to Run as Scheduled

Heightened Security at Bases, But No Drastic Changes

Regional Armed Forces bases have not made sweeping immediate changes to security in light of Monday morning’s shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. 

About 13,000 active duty, guard and reserve personnel and families, along with civilians, live and or work at Joint Base Andrews, according to the Base’s website.

Since Monday morning’s shooting, officials have been keeping an eye on the situation, but have not made any drastic changes. “We have heightened our security and we are continuing to monitor the situation,” spokesman Jim McKinney said.

According to the Joint Base Andrews Facebook page, personnel were asked to avoid travel to Navy Yard, Fort McNair, and Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling "due to their increased security postures."

VRE: Trains to Run as Scheduled

Virginia Railway Express commuter trains will run as normal Monday afternoon in light of the shootings at the Washington Naval Yard, officials with the rail service announced Monday afternoon. 

"VRE is saddened by this senseless tragedy and our thoughts are with those families impacted today's events at the Navy Yard," officials said in an email sent to riders. "In light of the events unfolding at the Navy Yard, we wanted to reach out to our riders to inform them of how this might impact service and their commute this afternoon."

If anything should change, VRE employees will notify riders immediately, representatives said.

Nats Game Canceled

According to ESPN, the Nationals-Braves game scheduled to take place tonight in D.C. has been canceled.

According to authorities, families of those at the Navy Yard this morning are being told to meet at Nationals stadium to receive word on the status of their family members or to be reunited with them once areas have been lifted off lock-down.
