The Blessing of the Animals

Local pets receive blessings at Church of the Ascension.

Fr. Michael Weaver and his wife Debbie hosted the traditional at  on Saturday. The church is located at the "Old Stone Church" in historic Centreville.

The traditional blessing is conducted annually by many churches in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, a humble friar who loved animals, even to the point of preaching sermons to birds. The blessing also serves as a thanksgiving to God for giving animals as companions.

The Church of the Ascension will participate in on Oct. 22nd.  The Old Stone Church, which was used as a hospital during the Civil War, will be available for tours. They will also have a book and baked goods sale and a traditional "Plowman's Lunch" which consists of an apple, bread, cheese and a drink ($5 charge), and at 4 p.m. will pray the traditionally Anglican service of Evensong (sung evening prayer).
