Updated: Tornado Watch in Fairfax County

Weather updates in our area.

Updated Thursday, 8:40 p.m. It's time for round two, folks: The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch and flash flood watch for all of Fairfax County. It is effective until 3 p.m. today.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect until 10:15 a.m.

Updated 11:20 p.m. Storms are starting to subside in the area, but ABC 7's Bob Ryan says there may be more tornado warnings in the metro D.C. area on Thursday. 

Updated 10:50 p.m. A tornado warning has been issued for Manassas and Manassas Park. Though it does not at this point cover the Centreville area, residents should be on guard. Nighttime tornadoes are 2.5 times more deadly than those that occur in the daytime.

Updated 7 p.m. Though the tornado warning has expired for Fairfax County, a severe thunderstorm warning is still in effect until 7:45 p.m. Commuters should be aware that the storm is currently hovering in the Lorton and Woodbridge areas, and funnel clouds have been sighted in Dumfries. Those who normally travel on I-95 should stay off the road. 

Updated 6:15 p.m. A tornado warning is in effect until 6:45 p.m. this evening for Fairfax, Stafford and Prince William Counties. 

The National Weather Service spotted a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado six miles north of Stafford, Va., moving at 50 miles per hour.

The NWS advises everyone to take cover as a precautionary measure. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows. If you are in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from debris. 

Do not wait to see or hear the tornado. Take cover now.

Original Post: A tornado watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for Fairfax County and the D.C. metro area. 

Fairfax County issued an alert this afternoon saying that there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms today, which could lead to large hail, damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes.
