Cheap Flights from Reagan National? Southwest and JetBlue Glide into Void

Justice Department expected to approve the move.

Getting from Northern Virginia to Reagan National Airport has always been easy. Finding a reasonably priced flight has not.

Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airlines, though, may soon provide flights that won't cost a wing and a leg.

Southwest hopes to more than double its presence at Reagan National by the end of 2014, adding 27 daily flights to its existing 17. JetBlue announced it has received rights for an additional 12 round-trip flights per day at Reagan National to its 18 existing slots.

“Reagan has long been a convenient but high-fare airport,” Gary Kelly, chairman, president and chief executive of Southwest, said in a statement. “Southwest plans to change that.”

Destinations and schedules haven't been announced.

The changes are thanks to the merger with American Airlines and US Airways and a Justice Department ruling that American must vacate at least 104 slots at Reagan.

The department must still approve the Southwest and JetBlue changes.
