Patriot, Liberty Dominate Baseball's First Round

Recap of 1st round and look ahead to Monday's baseball quarterfinals

In the first round of the Northern Region Baseball Tournament last night, the Liberty and Patriot districts dominated play with six of their eight teams winning their games. Those teams have now advanced to the regional quarterfinals on Monday afternoon.

The Liberty was matched up against the Concorde and the results of those games were: McLean shutting out Centreville 7-0, Langley upsetting Concorde top seed Robinson 3-0, Stone Bridge took down Oakton 4-3 after the Bulldogs scored all four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Westfield defeated Marshall 5-1.

Three of the four Patriot teams took down their opponents from the National: South County over Stuart 7-3, Lake Braddock crushed Wakefield 22-7, and West Springfield knocked off Washington & Lee. The only National District team to win was Yorktown who beat West Potomac 7-4.

In the McLean-Centreville showdown, the Highlanders held the Wildcats to three hits while Josh Sborz pitched a complete game and hit a home run that bounced off a car in the parking lot while Hardy Cox connected on another home run to help widen the margin.

Monday's quarterfinals will feature two games at Lake Braddock (1 and 4 PM) and those games will be: Lake Braddock vs. McLean and Westfield vs. Yorktown. The other two games will be at Madison (1 and 4 PM) and features Langley vs. South County and Stone Bridge vs. West Springfield.

I think that the best game in the second round will be McLean vs. Lake Braddock which features Liberty District Player of the Year from the Highlanders, Sborz going against the Liberty District co-pitchers of the year from the Bruins, Michael Church and Thomas Rogers.

Westfield has the Concorde pitcher of the Year in Bryan Drager and they go up against the Yorktown who has the National District player, Red Dowdell and pitcher of the year in John Yoest.

My predictions went well with the first round games as I got five of eight games correct. On Monday I have Lake Braddock, Westfield, South County, and Stone Bridge.
