Hurricane Irene Update: Heavy Rainfall, Possible Tropical Storm Conditions
Flash flood watch and tropical storm warning is in effect for the rest of Saturday.
Update, 6 p.m.—Flash flooding warning in Fairfax County. We have not heard of any reports specifically for Centreville, but it's not advisable to go out on the road unless necessary. Remember that most flood deaths occur in automobiles and flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Even one foot of water can be enough to sweep a vehicle away.
The worst of the weather from Hurricane Irene should occur between 6 p.m. tonight and 6 a.m. Sunday. While conditions here are not that bad yet, we are told that some areas, like Woodbridge, are experiencing heavy rainfall and extremely difficult driving conditions.
Saturday, 3:30 p.m.—Centreville will continue to experience heavy rain throughout the rest of Saturday afternoon as Hurricane Irene draws closer.

Gusts of wind may come as quickly as 36 mph this afternoon, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service. Rain may come up to half an inch in the area.
The worst weather in Centreville as a result of Irene should occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Prepare for possible tropical storm conditions Saturday night with with winds from the north blowing between 32 and 37 mph, but possible gusts of winds up to 44 mph.

There may also be heavy rainfall—between one to two inches—and thunderstorms after 2 a.m.
Hurricane Irene has sustained some winds about 85 mph and is now less than 90 miles south of Norfolk, Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell recently declared a state of emergency in advance of the storm to prepare for Irene.
