Archaeological Field Experience

Twens and Teens Dig Up Artifacts: Summer camp isn’t just for young children. This August the Fairfax County Park Authority is offering two sessions of a new archaeology camp for young adults ages 12 to 18 at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Campers will work alongside archaeologists during a small excavation of a 1700s and 1800s era family farm site. This is a well-rounded opportunity for teens to learn about the process of archaeological work and expand their appreciation for applied science and cultural history through working as part of a professional team. The experience is something that could enhance college resumes and give kids something interesting to write about in their college essays.

Archaeological Dig Field Experience runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. August 5 through 9 and August 12 through16.

Campers will uncover buried artifacts that have not been seen in hundreds of years. They will learn multidiscipline skills, such as GPS point and grid layout, excavating, washing, sorting, documenting, cataloging, and properly preserving artifacts that could be as old as 8,500 years. Instructors will explain the context and history of the artifacts uncovered to connect participants to the original people living on the site.

The cost for Fairfax County residents is $425 per camper. The cost is $440 for out-of-county campers. Registration for this camp is available online at Parktakes Online or by calling 703-222-4664. For more information, call 703-631-0013.
