Annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Every years tons of families come to the National Mall in DC to learn about different cultures.

Even though you might have missed the Smithsonian Folklife Festival last week, it is still going on through Sunday at the National Mall in Washington D.C.

The festival is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is a free event for families of all ages.

There is everything from AIDS quilts to food from other countries.

"I think of the festival as a living cultural exhibition," said Richard Kurin, director of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife Cultural Heritage on Smithsonian Folklife Festival website.

There are three main areas of the festival:

  • Campus and Community commemorates the 150th anniversary of Land Grant Universities and the USDA.
  • Citified focuses on arts east of the Anacostia River.
  • Creativity and Crisis has the AIDS memorial quilt.
