This Week at the Smart Markets Centreville Farmers' Market

As our final market of the season approaches, we can help you prepare for a winter without us in Centreville.

Dear Shopper,

It is hard to believe that we are so close to the end of the market. And just in case no one has yet said it, THANK YOU for a great year! We have come to know so many of you and look forward to seeing you each week.  And we hope that you have learned to know our vendors as well.  They are a great group to work with, so I have to assume they are great to do business with too.

With those products that you can buy frozen, freeze, or preserve in other ways when you get home, this is the time of year to stock up. Think about what you enjoy most and buy some to get you through at least part of the next six months or, better yet, find one of our year-round markets that suits your schedule and come shop with us there. Please visit our website for the details of each market -- the vendors for each market are listed for your convenience.

German may still have some tomatoes for canning or, even easier, for making into a quick and simple tomato sauce that you can use as a base for Tomato Carrot or Fall Minestrone Soup or to liven up the Winter Tomato Sauce recipe.  Buy a box of Max's apples for a big batch of applesauce. Buy a few chickens from Jacob or a bag full of Doug's ground-beef packages -- they will be there when you are feeling nostalgic for Jacob's smile or Doug's hat.  And of course you can buy and store Cavanna's pasta and sauces for months.  His sauces can also liven up a sauce or soup or stew in midwinter, and if you did not make your own, nothing reminds you more of summer than opening a container of pesto.

Cameron will be happy to speak with you about visiting the vineyard and will happily share news of his new venture in his tasting room.

We hope to see you over the winter.  With a little more effort you can still buy American at a farmers' market in the winter, and you can dine American too.  Stick with the seasonal foods and supplement when necessary with those green vegetables that do disappear from our markets in the winter, and you will be healthy all winter.

See you at the market!

Jean
