A Dream Becomes a Reality: Phase Cheer and Dance

My name is Jelaire Grillo. I am 26 years old and I am about to open a business. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Yes, it does. About two years ago, I got laid off from my job in DC at the ripe age of 24. Shortly before that I had dinner with a wonderful woman whom I didn’t know. After speaking with her about my dreams to open this gym, she told me to follow that dream and to make it happen. I immediately went home and started my business plan for a gym I was going to call Atomic All Stars. Three months later I found a new job and put the business plan down.

Fast forward to 2012 where I am a coach for and have been for three seasons now. I am sitting at a practice with my senior team and we are in a pretty crowded space for a team of 27, but we always make it work. Two of my cheer parents, Mark and Kim, are sitting down talking space (which always seems to be a common occurrence) when Mark turns to Kim and says “We need to get her, her own space.” Kim says “funny you should say that because she has a business plan to open her own gym someday.”

Practice ends, and as I am exiting the gym Mark and Kim say “Do you want to open a gym?” Needless to say I about passed out right there. This was my dream and people were actually talking to me about making it a reality. That was back in February.

Jump forward again to April 2012; Phase Cheer and Dance has been created! It has been a tough last couple of months but when those doors open in May, it will be well worth it.
