Physical Education Teacher's Passing Saddens Centreville High Community

Laura Beaver, who was known throughout Northern Virginia's athletic community for her work with VHSL field hockey, died Sunday.

Laura Beaver, a well-known physical education teacher at Centreville High, died Sunday.

Beaver had served at the school for many years, and was known throughout Northern Virginia for her work for field hockey in the Virginia High School League.

"Ms. Beaver was well known in the Northern Virginia athletic community and admired for her commitment to Centreville High School and its students," Principal Martin Grimm wrote in a message to parents. "I know I speak for the entire faculty when I say we were privileged to work with Ms. Beaver and found her to be an inspiration to us all."

Beaver also worked at Herndon High School for many years before coming to Centreville.

Grimm recommended that parents discuss Beaver's passing with their children.

"The most important thing is to deal openly with the subject and comfort your child if he or she is upset," Grimm wrote. "Please call the school if you would like to talk with one of the mental health professionals in Fairfax County Public Schools. We all share in the family’s loss and grief."
