As explained by the American Legion, Boys and Girls State is a comprehensive one week course in Virginia state and local government. Its purpose is to provide functional citizenship training to selected rising seniors.

This program affords these students the opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens; it also informs them of the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship, enabling them to better understand and participate in the functioning of their government.

Boys State will be held June 17-23, 2012 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, while Girls State will be held the same week at Longwood University in Farmville.

To be selected to attend this prestigious program, candidates interviewed with the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary at the and were evaluated on their personal qualifications of these characteristics:

  • Leadership
  • Initiative
  • Character
  • Scholarship
  • Cooperation
  • Honesty
  • Physical Fitness

Selectees were notified in April and attended orientation for the week-long event during May.

During their programs, the students will get to hear from and potentially meet several of Virginia’s top leaders. During the 2011 program, these leaders included Governor Bob McDonnell, Lt. Governor Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Karen Fulkerson is publicity chair of the CVHS PTSA.
