A Fairfax County police officer has been criminally charged in connection with the crash of a police cruiser into a utility pole.

Officer Carl Joseph Biggs, a two-year veteran of the force, crashed on May 12.

At the time, police said the cruiser was traveling southbound on Gallows Road when an unknown vehicle was traveling westbound on Masonville Drive and ran a stop sign. Police had asked for help identifying the vehicle, which had been reported to strike the police cruiser in the rear quarter panel, causing it to spin and strike a utility pole.

On Friday, police issued a news release stating that further investigation by the department's Crash Reconstruction Unit determined that no other vehicle was involved in the accident. The crash investigation revealed this was a single vehicle incident involving only the officer, the release said.Biggs has been charged with hit and run and filing a false police report, according to the news release.

He has been placed on administrative leave while the criminal case is underway. Once that case is concluded, the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau will continue its investigation, the release said.
