Fatal Crash Monday Night in Centreville Kills One

Charles V. McCormick, 72, of Centreville, died in the crash.

A Centreville man, Charles V. McCormick, 72, died Monday night after he was involved in a car crash at Centreville and Compton roads in Centreville, according to a news release from Fairfax County police.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. Monday. A preliminary investigation showed that a 1999 Mercedes SL500, which was being driven by a 70-year-old Leesburg man, was traveling north on Centreville Road approaching Compton Road.

A 1984 Oldsmobile two-door, driven by McCormick, of the 5700 block of Ottawa Road in Centreville, was traveling southbound on Centreville Road approaching the intersection of Compton Road. McCormick was attempting to make a left turn on to Compton Road and turned into the path of the oncoming Mercedes.

The Mercedes struck the passenger side of the Oldsmobile. McCormick was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

After officers responded to the crash, they summoned crash reconstruction detectives to the scene. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

I think that's one of the most dangerous intersection in Centreville and I don't understand why VDOT hasn't done anything yet? they put a left turn signal at Centreville rd (28) and Green Trails Blvd but they didn't at Compton Rd - The view we have making a left turn going South on 28 is wide open but to make a left turn onto Compton Rd(which is YIELD) is not. I hope they fix that soon

@milton - with all due respect, what are you talking about? There is PLENTY of site distance to view oncoming traffic in either direction on 28 when making a left onto Compton Rd. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=compton+rd&hl=en&ll=38.810027,-77.448968&spn=0.006195,0.009645&gl=us&hnear=Compton+Rd,+Fairfax,+Virginia&t=m&z=17&layer=c&cbll=38.810138,-77.448957&panoid=F_Zc1VJB63v3PlzIpBxOzQ&cbp=12,191.55,,0,8.51 I am sorry that this driver lost his life but not ALL drivers should be punished just because he made an error in judgement when making that left but that is not because of any unsafe. Another old lady died on 123 @ Zion earlier in the year doing the same thing. Happens more than you think. That's why there's a sign up next to the light saying "LEFT TURN YIELD ON GREEN"
