Fatal Crash Monday Night in Centreville Kills One

Charles V. McCormick, 72, of Centreville, died in the crash.

A Centreville man, Charles V. McCormick, 72, died Monday night after he was involved in a car crash at Centreville and Compton roads in Centreville, according to a news release from Fairfax County police.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. Monday. A preliminary investigation showed that a 1999 Mercedes SL500, which was being driven by a 70-year-old Leesburg man, was traveling north on Centreville Road approaching Compton Road.

A 1984 Oldsmobile two-door, driven by McCormick, of the 5700 block of Ottawa Road in Centreville, was traveling southbound on Centreville Road approaching the intersection of Compton Road. McCormick was attempting to make a left turn on to Compton Road and turned into the path of the oncoming Mercedes.

The Mercedes struck the passenger side of the Oldsmobile. McCormick was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

After officers responded to the crash, they summoned crash reconstruction detectives to the scene. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
