Firefighters Canvas Centreville to "Fill the Boot"

Members of the Fire and Rescue Department start their annual drive to help kids with muscular dystrophy.

It's a familiar, but always attention-grabbing, sight near Lee Highway around this time of year: local firefighters holding empty boots asking motorists to drop some money inside for a good cause.

Fairfax County firefighters and rescue workers, and for the next four days they'll raise money at intersections around the county. All proceeds go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Last year, Station 17 raised well over $13,000 and Station 38 raised over $14,000.

The drive is part of a national effort among fire and rescue workers. For the last eight years, Fairfax County as a whole has been number one or two in the nation in raising funds. Last year, county personnel collected $560,000 for charity. All funds raised stay within the metro area.
