One-Year Sentence for Rapist's Immigration Violation
Salvador Portillo Saravia, who is already serving a 25-year sentence for raping a child, was sentenced Friday to a year in prison for illegally re-entering the country.

On Friday, United States District Judge Claude Hilton sentenced Portillo Saravia, who to the charge of illegally reentering the U.S. after being deported. Portillo Saravia is a native of El Salvador and authorities say he is also a member of the MS-13 street gang.
Portillo Saravia, now 30, raped the 9-year-old girl around shortly after Christmas 2010, authorities said. He then fled to Texas, in February 2011.

A Washington Post article showed that Portillo Saravia should have been caught after being charged with a lesser crime in Loudoun County shortly before the rape. The article demonstrated that Secure Communities, a federal database that tracks deported immigrants, had some shortcomings. The case inspired legislators to grant additional funding for the database.
