Pedestrian Struck by School Bus, Dies of Injuries

A Fairfax County Public Schools bus driver was placed on administrative leave after hitting the man Thursday while he was in a crosswalk on Gallows Road.

An 89-year-old Annandale man was struck by a school bus on Thursday and later died at a local hospital, according to Fairfax County police.

Joon Seok Ahn, 89, of 6925 Columbia Pike was walking westbound on Gallows Road at the intersection with Columbia Pike Thursday around 2:30 p.m. when a Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) bus hit him, according to police. The bus, which FCPS spokesman John Torre said had students on board at the time, was stopped in the southbound turn lanes of Gallows Road. Ahn was walking in the crosswalk while traffic was stopped, but the bus moved forward and struck him.

Ahn was taken to nearby INOVA hospital and pronounced dead a short time after.

Torre said the bus driver, Cristinia Fernandez, 30, of Centreville, has been placed on administrative leave. According to police, Fernandez was charged with "failure to pay time and attention."

The investigation is ongoing, but so far, police do not suspect that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
