Sully District Police Focus on DWI Enforcement Over July 4 Weekend

The initiative, "All Eyes on DWIs" aims to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes.

Fairfax County Police want to make sure that July 4 celebrations don't impact safety on the road.

This week, police officers in the Sully District are focusing on DUI prevention and enforcing the state's "move-over law" for emergency vehicles. The "All Eyes for DWIs" initiative, which lasts until July 7, comes at a time when the Sully District has seen a large increase in alcohol-related crashes.

The number of crashes increased by 16 percent from 2011 to 2012, with 98 alcohol-related crashes in 2012, according to police data. Last year, the Fairfax County police officers arrested 2,628 people on DWI charges

Officers will also work to enforce the move-over law, which requires drivers to change lanes, when possible, or reduce speed when when they approach an emergency vehicle stopped on the road with emergency lights activated.
