Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova Announces Re-Election Campaign

Bulova will host a campaign kickoff party at GMU this weekend.

Sharon Bulova is looking forward to November.

Bulova will run against Republican Spike Williams to re-claim her seat as the Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Her campaign kickoff party will be held at George Mason University's Mason Inn and Conference Center this Sunday.

Under Bulova’s leadership, Fairfax County has upheld its reputation as Virginia’s best-managed county. Bulova has been recognized for her effective management of the county budget during tough economic times as well as for her role in improving transportation in Fairfax County.

A resident of Northern Virginia for 45 years, Bulova got her start in local government when she became involved with the Kings Park West Civic Association in the 1980s. She worked closely with then-Braddock District Supervisor Audrey Moore on two projects concerning residents in her neighborhood and was inspired by Moore’s work.

“I so admired the way she was able to bring us together, and to help us work through issues associated with the road project and also the land use case,” said Bulova. “I was working in private industry at the time, but my work with Audrey Moore was so satisfying and so interesting, that when she had a vacancy on her staff she invited me to come work for her.”

Bulova worked as a staff aide for Moore for two years and worked closely with Moore to develop the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail system. When Moore was elected as Board of Supervisors chairman in the late 1980s, she encouraged Bulova to run for her vacant seat. Bulova served as Braddock District Supervisor for 21 years until she was elected as Board of Supervisors chairman in 2009.

“It’s a very different job than a district supervisor, but my background in the community and having been a district supervisor and also having been the chairman of the budget committee for the years I’ve been in office prepared me especially well for the position of chairman,” said Bulova.

If re-elected, Bulova plans to push some major transportation projects in the county including development of the Dulles Rail project, which she considers a “number one priority”.  She would also like to see commuters receive the full benefits of the new HOT lanes on the Beltway by way of express buses.

“I am committed to make sure we have express bus service on those lanes so that people will have a transit alternative that does not already exist,” said Bulova. “Right now we don’t have bus service on the Beltway between Springfield and Tysons Corner because people sit in traffic on Beltway, but with new lanes we’ll have the opportunity to put express bus service between Tysons Corner, Braddock Road, and Springfield. It will be a new transit opportunity for people.”

Bulova’s agenda also includes providing more transit options to the Richmond Highway corridor and the I-66 corridor via express buses or, in the case of Route 1, light rail.

Bulova's opponent, Spike Williams, has disagreed with many of Bulova's initiatives.

"I respect the amount of knowledge she's accumulated over the years," said Williams. "But she's had a lot of time to develop some bad habits."
