George Allen Headlines Centreville Fundraiser for Schoeneman

Allen asks for support for Schoeneman, emphasizes jobs, transportation in remarks at Centreville fundraiser.

Centreville played host to a number of local and state politicians this week, including former governor and senator .

Allen, who is running for senate in the 2012 election against former Virginia governor , headlined the fundraiser for 37th District Republican candidate  on Tuesday at the Centreville home of Wayne and Vickie Hull.

Allen emphasized the economy and transportation in Northern Virginia during his remarks.

“The number one issue is jobs,” Allen said. “Federal and state decisions affect this.” He said that the federal government uses the Davis-Bacon Act (DBA) wages, a Depression-era law, to determine how transportation contracts are granted for interstate projects throughout the state.

“Federally involved and federal-funded projects restrict competition in favor of unions,” he said. “Ninety-five percent of Virginia contractors are non-union.” He argued that a majority of federal transportation contracts go to contractors in neighboring states, costing Virginians not only jobs, but money.

“Davis-Bacon wages cost 20 to 25 percent more,” than non-union contracts, Allen said. He added if politicians did not change transportation contract laws, drivers on the Dulles toll-road would ultimately be the ones to pay for the metro-rail extension.

Allen said that he had nothing but respect for Schoeneman, calling the candidate “smart, principled,” and up for the challenge of “tough fights.”

“Ideas matter,” he said. “We care about the ability for children to achieve their dreams in life.”

Schoeneman is running against Democrat , the incumbent delegate. Several districts in Centreville and the surrounding area are new to the district this year.

Supporters paid anywhere from $40-1,000 for the event. As of the latest campaign filings, Bulova had raised $190,988; Schoeneman raised $110,759.

Also in attendance at the fundraiser were Tim Hugo (40th District delegate), John T. Frey (County Circuit Court Clerk) and School Board candidate Sheila Ratnam (Sully District).
