A local girl with Down Syndrome will model in a fashion show headlined by Aretha Franklin, to raise awareness about the chromosomal disorder affecting one in every 691 babies.
Thirteen models from the DC metro area who have Down syndrome, including 7-year-old Canela Bahamonde, of Centreville, will participate in the Global Down Syndrome Foundation's Be Beautiful Be Yourself Gala and Fashion Show on May 8.
Kyra Phillips of CNN, John Roberts of Fox News, and model Beverly Johnson will also attend. The Foundation plans to honor Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wa.) and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) at the gala.
