Coming to I-66 Next Week: More Info on Travel Times

VDOT will add more message signs beginning April 2.

Drivers are still going to be sitting in traffic on I-66—but at least they'll know for how long. 

Beginning April 2, motorists on I-66 will see travel times on seven new overhead message signs for the 35 miles from Washington to Haymarket. VDOT has already posted three, as part of a pilot project that began in 2011. 

Eastbound I-66 travel times will be posted:

  • East of Route 234, with the travel time to the Vienna Metro
  • At the Fairfax County Parkway, with the travel time to I-495
  • Near Route 50, with the travel time to Washington, D.C.

Westbound I-66 travel times will be posted:

  • At Sycamore Street, with the time to I-495
  • Before the Beltway, with the time to Route 50
  • West of Route 123, with the time to Route 234 Business
  • At Monument Drive, with the time to Route 29 in Gainesville
  • Just west of the Fairfax County Parkway, with the time to Route 29 in Gainesville
  • Just west of the rest area with the time to Route 15 in Haymarket.

VDOT will add six more locations by the summertime: two on I-66 and four locations on major roads approaching I-66.

The signs will display travel times on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
