Seven Centreville wrestlers placed in the 30-team NOVA Classic Wrestling Tournament over the weekend of Dec. 8-9. Centreville was in fourth place after the first round, but cruised into the lead after round two. The team kept that lead right into the final round, only to lose it to the 2012 NOVA Classic Champions, Battlefield High School. All Centreville wins through the first two rounds were by pin. The Wildcats had a rough final round, only managing one win; senior Dillon Dull won his fifth/sixth place match, solidifying Centreville’s second place team finish.
The Wildcats put four wrestlers into the finals, and three others in the placement matches Saturday night. At 106 pounds, Victor Echevarria dominated the start of his high school career. After placing fourth last weekend at McDonogh, Victor romped his way through the NOVA Classic on his way to a second place finish.
During his semifinal bout, Echevarria found himself down early to a much bigger and stronger wrestler, but finished the bout strong and picking up the win. At 120 pounds Michael Vu found the podium for the second time in his young career, placing sixth. Vu began the weekend with two impressive wins, but was upended in the quarters. Connor Mitchell and Joey Steinbach were dominant in their opening rounds, making it all the way to the semi finals, where they picked up medical forfeits.
Will Fulton, the Wildcat 152-pounder, put together a spectacular tournament but came up short in his bid for the finals. The second year senior picked up a few pins on the weekend and greatly contributed to his teams second place finish. At 160 pounds, Dillon Dull continued to impress, finishing fifth after a quarter-final loss. The final Centreville placer was sophomore Tyler Love at 182 pounds. Love crushed his way to the semi’s before dominating his South lakes opponent thanks to his aggressive style.
Although seven wrestlers placed, there were other stellar performances for the Wildcat wrestlers. Chung Do Kim (113), Will Johnson (170), Jordan Brooks (220), and Jason Park (HWT) all came up one match short of joining their teammates on the podium, but all played crucial roles in Centreville’s strong early season showing. The team is scheduled to wrestle next at Skyline High School in the Appalachian Dual Tournament on Dec. 22 and 23.
