Rocky Run Middle School Takes State Chess Championship Title

Students from Greenbriar West and Bull Run elementary schools also performed well in the final results.

On March 9 and 10, the Rocky Run Middle School Chess Team took the Virginia State K-8 Team Scholastic Chess Champion title for grades K-8, beating out some 20 other teams across the state at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.

Greenbriar West took third place in the team category. 

In the individual competition, three out of the eight members of the Rocky Run team also earned the top 10 individual trophies, out of 95 competitors from other middle schools in Va. Individual trophies went to:

  • Alvin Cao (second place)
  • Aaryan Balu (fourth place)
  • Abhinay Dommalapati (eighth place)
  • Tanmay Khattar
  • Jonathan Cao
  • Ashish S Tondwalkar
  • Saiteja Bevara
  • Brian Dickinson

In the K-3 category, the team from Greenbriar West Elementary School captured top honors, and team member Aasa Dommalapati won the individual K-3 championship. 

In addition to Dommalapati, team members include Andrew Wang, Aarav Bajaj, Justin Chen, Siddharth Krishnan, Asrith Biradavolu, Michael Tress, Vedanth Ramachandra, Gilbert Jang, Paurav Kananur, Aryan Kumawat, Siddhaarth Balamuthaiya, Rhea Voddi, Rakendu Malladi, Neha Konduru, Suhas Nandiraju, Rishi Sarraff, Siddharth Tibrewala, Kaavya Karthik, Akanksha Tibrewala, and James Tress.

Bull Run Elementary School took third place in the K-3 category, and second place in the K-5 category.
