Westfield Wrestling Team Wins Northern Region

Westfield High School weekly sports recap.

Coach Chuck Hoskins and his stalwart varsity wrestling team’s 2012 postseason success continued to bloom as the Bulldogs brought home the Northern Regional Championship banner last Saturday night after winning the tourney with a score of 193 points.

The championship is ’s fourth regional title throughout the past five years. Eight wrestlers will represent Westfield at the state championships later this month. The Bulldogs also won the Concorde District tournament on Feb. 4.

“We’re excited and still have some work to do,” said Hoskins, hours before the regional matches. “We’re in a good place right now by God’s grace. If we perform like we did last weekend—if they do that we’ll be right in the mix.”

Hoskins’ boys did indeed perform as well, if not better at regionals. Last year Beau Donahue, at 140 pounds, won states. This year he bumped up to 152 and won the regional title and will head to states once again. Four other Bulldogs claimed second-place finishes to round out an outstanding team performance.

Hoskins said many of his boys had to wrestle outside of their weight class—a strategy the coach felt was best for the team as a whole.

“They adapted really well and next year we’re hoping to grow into those weight classes and big and strong and the toughest.”

The Bulldogs were forced into an uphill battle all season as the team had to forfeit two weight classes at every meet, due to vacancies. The holes unfortunately gave Westfield’s opponents a 12-point advantage. Fortunately, the Bulldog wrestlers vast talent allowed them to overcome that deficit in the majority of their matches.

Hoskins and Westfield’s ‘great eight’ will attempt to achieve the trifecta at states on Feb. 17-18 at Hayfield Secondary School.

Bulldogs go 10-0 in district, earn No.1-seed

Doug Ewell’s varsity boys’ Bulldog basketball team (19-3, 10-0) capped off the regular season in the same fashion it began – utter dominance. Westfield clipped both 64-49, and 73-42 last week, to finish off a clean sweep of its 10 district opponents on the schedule to earn the No.1 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming Concorde tournament.

“It was a real hard fought battle,” said Ewell. “That was our first goal, to get the number one seed and you also get a home game.”

The Hornets took an early lead and looked to play spoiler until Julius Rosa found his hot hand, scoring 12 points including 5-of-8 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, teammate C.J. Hill drained three buckets from beyond the arc. Herndon continued fighting for three quarters until Westfield outscored Herndon 22-13 in the final quarter to go to 10-0 in the Concorde. Ewell said the victory was a team effort as four of his Bulldogs scored at least nine points in the game: Zach Elcano (11), Rosa (12), Hill (9) and Quentin Basil (9). Westfield, with the top seed, earned six days off before the team’s first tourney match-up this coming Thursday. However, Coach Ewell said his boys must not take that time off lightly.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to have six days off,” Ewell said regarding the bye. “But the teams who start Tuesday have a big advantage starting early.”

The Bulldogs would eventually cruise past Oakton in the last game of the regular season, 73-42.

The coach added that the No.1 seed has won the Concorde Championship 10 of the last 12 seasons and he hopes his boys can add to that streak.

Westfield plays its first tournament game on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. Opponent TBD.

Indoor Track boasts well in postseason tourneys

Westfield’s indoor track & field team showed strong performances in both days of the Concorde Championships on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2. Individually, Tony Richardson won shot put, while Nathan Kiley won the 300-meter championship. The boys also took first-place finishes in three relays: 4X200, 4X400 and 4X800.

Coach Kelly Deegan and her track stars will compete in the Northern Regional meet on Feb. 18 at George Mason University.

Girls’ basketball falls short versus two district opponents

After a tremendous overtime victory over rival on Feb. 3, the Westfield varsity girls’ basketball squad (12-10, 3-7) ended the regular season on a low note with losses to both Herndon 52-44, and Oakton 51-34 last week. Yet on a positive note, three Bulldogs continue to average more than eight points a game: Maggie McInturff (9.3), Jules Abruzzo (9.0) and Lauren Hayden (8.0).

Westfield took an early lead and looked solid at the half, 29-24. But the Hornets made adjustments in the third and dominated the fourth quarter 28-15, to run away with the win, 52-44.

The time and place for Westfield’s first-round game in the Concorde Tournament has yet to be posted.
