Centreville Football Coach Reflects on Winning Season, Looks Ahead to Victory

Centreville High School will face South Lakes High School on Friday in the first round of playoffs.

Looking back on an undefeated regular season, Centreville Varsity Football Coach Chris Haddock said going 10-0 wasn't the primary goal of his team when they started down this road in early fall.

"Going into the season, our coaching staff felt that we would have a strong team and had (to) win a lot of games," he said.  "We believe in the process of getting better every day and if we do that, winning will take care of itself."

And that it did.  The Centreville Wildcats clinched the Concorde District Championship on Friday night  with a very big win over final opponent Robinson High School.

Not that the road leading to champion status and a playoff berth wasn't difficult.
"We feel our schedule was very tough, Haddock said. "Our Concorde District schedule always presents a great challenge every year.  Our out-of-conference schedule was very tough as well. Westfield (High School) is always a very challenging game as was the Robinson game. We felt like TC Williams High matched up with us very well also."

Going in to the first round of playoff action on Friday against Reston's own South Lakes Seahawks, Haddock said practices are about the same but his spoken message to the team is a little different.

"The difference is the constant reminder that if you don’t play well in your game, you could lose and your season will be over," he said.  "There is more urgency and more at stake."

Friday's 6A North tournament playoff game is on the Wildcats home field in Clifton at 7:30 p.m. The pot of gold at the end of this rainbow is a game in Charlottesville against the 6A South Champion.
