Centreville Girls Advance in Concorde Tourney

Wildcats clinch a berth in Northern Region tournament, too

The Centreville Wildcats advanced last night to the Concorde District semifinals after a win over the Chargers, 51-40.

“Give credit to [Chantilly],” said Centreville head coach Wallace Horton. “They came out and they gave us something of a scare, but we managed to hold things out and pull out a victory.”

Centreville leading scorer Erin Meador poured in 14 points, but her teammate, junior forward Chaney Forbush, led all scorers with 23 points. For the Chargers, junior Lauren Mashinski lead the team with 12 points, while junior Carmen Watson added 10.

“We knew we didn’t want our season to end here tonight,” said Forbush. “Erin was terrific in getting me the ball so that I could shoot.”

In the first quarter, Forbush led the way with six points thanks to some great passing. She kept her pace up for the Wildcats in the second quarter, adding seven more to give her 13 points scored at the half. The only person to score for the Chargers in the second quarter was junior Lauren Mashinski who scored all three baskets for Chantilly.

However, near the end of the third quarter, Watson added a pair of 3-pointers to cut the lead. The Wildcats managed to pull away for a bit thanks to Meador and Forbush, but then baskets and free throws by Katrina Hutzell and Watson cut the lead to four points. After that it became a defensive back and forth, with neither team scoring for almost three minutes until Forbush scored. On the next possession, Meador blocked an attempt by Allison Rowe, which led to the first basket of the quarter by senior Taylor O’Hara, that all but sealed the game..

The Wildcats now move on to the Concorde semifinals Wednesday, when they’ll play Robinson. Chantilly High School will host the remainder of the tournament.
