Centreville Places Sixth at Concorde District Championships

Westfield places first in boys swimming.

Cub Run RECenter hosted the 2011 Concorde District Swim and Dive Championships Saturday evening. Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, Oakton, Robinson and Westfield High Schools all were represented well as the district’s best swimmers performed on the sport’s biggest stage. Parents and fans alike packed the Cub Run natatorium to cheer on their favorite student athlete.

On a night that saw several swimmers set district records, perhaps no bigger story was that of Oakton winning its first district title in the school’s 44 year history. Led by Texas- bound senior Kaitlin Pawlowicz, and freshman sensation Janet Hu, the Oakton Girls placed first in the meet with 419 points, followed by Robinson (373) and Westfield (368).

“It was a really big team win. In our school’s history, the girls have never won a district, regional, or state title. Starting off with districts is an awesome feeling. All of us (girls) have worked extremely hard, the boys too, but we girls wanted this badly, and the hard work finally paid off,” said Pawlowicz, taking time away from celebrating with her teammates to speak with Patch.

Freshman sensation, Janet Hu, who broke an eight-year district record in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, remarked:  “It was my first districts and my first year being in high school, I’m really excited and so happy to be a part of this.”

When asked what it meant to be a part of Oakton swim history, Oakton head coach Hunter Owen said, “This is great! The girls have never won a championship whatsoever; this is our first title at Oakton and we’re ecstatic about it. They did a great job. Everyone worked really hard and we couldn’t have asked for anything better from them.”

In boys swimming action, the Westfield Bulldogs edged out Oakton for first place meet honors with 429 points. Thanks to an impressive 400 yard freestyle relay finish, Westfield’s 40 point relay victory propelled them to a first place finish. Oakton finished second with 427 points while Chantilly came in third with 397.

“I couldn’t have asked more from them, they swam a great meet. We probably had 95 percent lifetime best times tonight, awesome performance. I’m happy with how we did. The boys are looking really strong for next week when team depth isn’t as much of a factor and star power is. We’re excited about the next three weeks.” remarked Westfield head coach Bruce Andersen.
