'Team Andrew' Prevails, Plays Host to Special Guest

Andrew McCaffrey pays a special visit to the team nicknamed in his honor at districts.

The Cross Country team’s top seven runners . The Wildcats Girls finished their season winning third place in the district, behind and . 

Individually placing fourth in the District was junior Rebecca Vinter clocking in at 18:28 on the three-mile course. Freshman Jackie O’Shea placed 8th, followed by junior Joanna Ahn at 17th place. The Boys placed fifth in the District. Top finisher junior Chan Young Lee came in at 14th place with a 16:11 time. Freshman Bobby Dunn placed 22nd, followed closely by senior Chris Jones at 24th.

The teams placed one runner, Chan Young Lee, in the Northern Regional Championships boys race, to occur at Burke Lake on Thursday, November 3rd.   All top seven girls will participate in the girls race at regionals as well.  

But for Centreville’s team, the most memorable moments of the day were not on the course, but back at the tent. Over the course of the cross country season, the Wildcats have nicknamed themselves , the 13-year-old younger brother of two Wildcat XC runners, Michael and Sara.

For almost two years Andrew has fought osteogenic sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that normally affects children between 10 and 20 years old. He has endured months of chemo and ten surgeries to his right knee and lungs, as well as spending a total of nearly six months in and out of hospitals, all in efforts to eradicate the cancer from his body. 

The CVHS team has dedicated their victories and determination to Andrew, drawing inspiration from his courage, optimism and faith. As a special treat at Districts, Andrew and his mom Lisa came to cheer on the team at Burke Lake.  

 

The varsity field hockey team was defeated by  during the opening round of the Northern Region Tournament on Oct. 25, 3-1.

Senior RB Manny Smith accumulated 167 yards rushing and senior Chase Walter scored the Centreville touchdown while senior Conner Coward kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. The Wildcats next play at on Friday, Nov. 4th, at 7:30 p.m., in their final game of the regular season.
