U.S. Skating Score Shocker: Ashley Wagner Photo Going Viral

A redemptive, powerhouse performance from area alum Ashley Wagner this weekend during the team skating competition in Sochi was seen by even her toughest critics as a return to form after a poor performance last month at the U.S. National Championships.

But the routine didn't impress the judges, and the U.S. skater and West Potomac grad wore her shocked reaction on her face in a photo that is going viral.

As Huffington Post points out, "The two-time U.S. champion was very, very happy right up until the moment when she saw her score. In full view of those tuned in to NBC Sports Network and watching live streaming coverage of the event online, Wagner's jaw dropped upon learning the judges had awarded a 32.16 technical score and a 30.94 component score."

It was good enough to keep the U.S. team in the race to medal, but clearly not what Wagner was expecting.

"It wasn't what I was really hoping for," Wagner said when asked by Andrea Joyce of NBC about her score. "I know what the program is capable of and I know where the scores should be when I skate very well so I'll just take a look at the protocols."

The photo reminded many observers of an image of U.S. gymnast McKayla Maroney looking "not impressed" during the 2012 Summer Olympics. The picture led to a playful recreation by the olympian and President Barack Obama during a White House visit.
