Westfield Weekly Sports Review

May 2-6 Westfield athletic action.

Softball: The Westfield Bulldog softball team (10-3) continued their impressive run this season, winning games on Monday and Tuesday this week. The Bulldogs defeated 12-2 on Monday, and Robinson, 8-0, on Tuesday.

After winning a home double header against Herndon on Friday 12-2 and 9-2, the Bulldogs hit the road as they close out their season with games at Stone Bridge (5/7), Chantilly (5/10), and Oakton (5/13).

Baseball: Members of the baseball team received a late season break as the Bulldogs (13-3) had only two games on the schedule this week. The team played Robinson on Monday, winning 1-0. While runs were at a premium for both schools, Aaron Hoover’s pitching carried the Bulldogs to victory. The senior turned in arguably his best performance of the season. Hoover pitched a complete game, giving up only three hits, while striking out nine Robinson batters.

Hayden Ferington’s fourth inning solo homerun gave Westfield the run needed for victory. The Bulldogs defeated Herndon 12-2 on Friday, and will travel to Chantilly and Oakton to close out their regular season next week.

Girls Lacrosse: Westfield (8-3) closed the regular season out on a bad note Monday, losing 21-7 at James Madison. The regular season’s final game showcased two of the area’s more talented teams as Madison entered the contest 11-0.

Molly O’Sullivan led the Bulldogs with two goals, while Lindsay Slover had six saves. The Bulldogs will try to rebound from Monday’s loss in time for the Concorde District playoffs which began on Friday, May 6. The Bulldogs have a first round bye before they make their run at a second consecutive Concorde District Championship.

Boys Lacrosse: After a week off from play, Westfield (7-7) begins their quest for the Concorde District title Friday evening at Herndon High School (results unavailable at time of publishing). In the two schools’ lone regular season head-to-head matchup, Westfield defeated Herndon 9-7 on March 21st.

Boys Soccer: The Bulldogs (3-7-2) struggled this week, losing to Washington-Lee and South County. Washington-Lee traveled to Westfield Tuesday evening and shutout the Bulldogs 6-0. Washington Lee’s Keith Ricks proved to be too much for Westfield as he scored three goals in the contest. The win against Wakefield was Washington-Lee’s ninth of the year, and their fifth straight.

Westfield had only one day to dwell on Tuesday defeat as they hit the road for a game against South County on Thursday. Both teams played each other extremely close all game, but South County managed to edge Westfield 3-2.

The Bulldogs host Centreville on Tuesday, May 10, in their final game of the regular season.

Girls Soccer: Westfield (8-1-3) won their eighth game of the season Tuesday as the team defeated Washington-Lee 3-1. Katherine Bukovsky was a dominant force in the game, scoring all three of Westfield’s goals. Shannon Casey was stingy at goalkeeper, recording five saves and allowing only one goal.

Thursday’s game against Woodson was one where points were at a premium. Both schools ended the game in overtime with a 1-1 tie. The tie was Westfield’s third on the season.

The Bulldogs close out their regular season on Tuesday, May 10, as they travel to Centreville.
