Adoptable Pet of the Week - Meet Forest!

Introducing Forest, a small male white poodle/bichon mix. He is about a year old and weighs nine pounds, but could gain a couple. He is neutered and microchipped and in good health. He is up to date on shots and has a non-shedding coat.

I have to admit, this week, I am a bit biased. Forest is hanging out at my house for the time being and he's been an absolute pleasure. 

The bad news is that Forest was stray so I don't have a whole lot of information about his background. The good news is that it means a clean slate for him. He's wiping out the past and ready for a new future.

I brought Forest home yesterday and he just fit right in. He's a very affectionate boy and if you decide to rub his belly for most of the day—well, that would be fine with him. He has very good leash manners and appears to be completely housetrained. Now, it was quite cold last night and I think Forest prefers not to walk in cold, wet grass. Can you blame him?

So far, Forest has been great with men, women and kids. I am guessing he will also be just fine with other dogs. He doesn't seem to startle easily and he is not skittish. Believe me, the Caps game was on last night and it got pretty loud in here. If Forest can handle that, he can pretty much handle anything. 

He is a good eater, which is great because he's a bit on the waifish side and could stand to gain a few pounds. He was recently groomed in a close cropped coif to take care of his matted hair, but I imagine he will be quite poofy when it grows out. The kids say he feels like velvet. Or cotton candy.

Yesterday, we offered him a stuffed squeaky monkey to play with and he was not at all interested. Today, I guess he felt a little more comfortable because he retreived that monkey and went to town! Squeak squeak.

As far as formal training—we are working on some basic commands. Either he doesn't know "sit" or is still sore from his neuter surgery. He does know to wait until I open the door and give him the "ok" to go outside. Although he was a stray and on the run for a while, he does not bolt out the door and he sticks close to his people. He would, however, benefit from a fenced yard for some off leash romping and prancing.

Yes, I said prancing.

Due to his small size, I would say he would do best in a home with kids over five.  My kids have been all over him and we have yet to hear any signs of displeasure from Forest. Well, that's not exactly true. Forest is not a big fan of the crate, but he does settle down after a few minutes. 

Forest will be at the AFH (A Forever Home) adoption event on Sunday, Oct. 30th from 1 to 4 p.m. and would love to meet you.
