Pet Adoption Weekend November 11 to 13

This weekend is National Pet Adoption Weekend at many local pet stores.

This weekend, November 12th and 13th, is National Pet Adoption Weekend at some well-known large pet supply retailers.

Petco is holding their event on both Saturday and Sunday.  They are partnering with local animal rescues and shelters in an effort to place homeless pets into loving forever homes.  The event is sponsored by Iams and is called Home 4 the Holidays.  As part of the promotion, new adopters can expect to receive special offers on Iams pet food, as well as pet supplies from Petco.  Click here for your nearest Petco location and to find out which pet rescue and/or shelter will be featured.

PetSmart’s adoption weekend will run Friday, November 11 through Sunday, November 13 and is sponsored by PetSmart and Purina.  Most recently, their September adoption weekend found homes for nearly 18,000 pets.  Click here for locations, as well as additional information on their adoption process.

Additionally, some smaller pet supply stores will be holding adoption events this weekend.

Wylie Wagg will have dogs available for adoption both weekend days. Saturday, at their Fairfax location, Homeward Trails Animal Rescue will be on hand with available dogs hoping to find their new homes in time for the winter holidays.  Also on Saturday, at their Falls Church location. Whole Pet Central in Ashburn, VA will hold a dog adoption event Saturday from 1pm to 4pm featuring dogs and puppies from A Forever Home Rescue Foundation.  On Sunday, you can find A Forever Home at the Petco in the Greenbriar shopping center in Chantilly.  Adoption hours will be 1 to 4pm.  For an up to date list of available animals, please visit the AFH website.

Recently, Maribel Taylor-Mattox of A Forever Home shared some helpful tips on dog adoption.  You can read the entire interview.   Adopting a pet is a big step and not a decision to take lightly.  It’s wise to do as much research as possible beforehand.  One of the founders of Petfinder.com has written a very informative book that comes highly recommended by many animal rescue organizations.  You can find The Adopted Dog Bible by Kim Saunders here and at many other online retailers.  You can also find it in your local library.

If you are looking for a pet to complete your family, please consider attending one of these local events.
