Valentine's Day: Is It Really What We Think It Is?

Red and pink excessively cover every store. Husbands and boyfriends panic hurriedly through checkout lines grabbing nice roses and cards. Yup, Valentine's Day is here! However, this holiday is not romantic in origins. In reality, this holiday was a Christian commemoration of early Christians who had the name Valentine. For example, during the rule of the Romans, Emperor Claudius II had two Christian saints put to death. Thus the name St. Valentine's Day is used occasionally to mark these martyrs' memory. While not all Christian denominations celebrate this holiday, it is a well revered and respected tradition.

So why all the commercialization? A day that was meant to be sacred to honor and love saints for some, has become something to honor and love the ones closest to us. While that is not completely a bad thing, why settle on one day to do that? Why the need to advertise chocolates, jewelry, and flowers when there was something so much more spiritual in meaning behind Valentine's Day? However, like other spiritual holidays such as Christmas, much of that has been eroded by the desire to give gifts and make money.
