Bulldogs Upset in Concorde District Title Game

Despite comeback, Westfield falls to Oakton in the championship game.

When the Westfield and Oakton boys lacrosse teams met in the regular season, the Cougars had the lead at halftime only to see the Bulldogs catch up and get ahead for the win.  In the Concorde District Championship game on Friday, history was close to repeating itself. But this time the No. 4 Cougars held on to upset the No. 2 Bulldogs with a 9-8 final score.  The teams battled from the start, as the Bulldogs went a man down on the first play. Though the Cougars did not capitalize it on it, they did toss in a goal about two minutes later, which Reece Schnippel answered with an unassisted goal. John Aversa took the lead for the Bulldogs with about six minutes left in the first quarter, but the Cougars tied it again about a minute later. The …

Wildcats Fall in District Title Game

Early deficit too much for Centreville to overcome.

Looking to unseat the reigning Concorde District Champions, the Centreville High girls lacrosse team aimed for a similar early dominance they had over the Oakton Cougars the first time they met up this season.  But the second time around, it was the Cougars who jumped to an early lead, and the Wildcats never found a way to mount a comeback. The Wildcats fell short of the Concorde District title in a 14-7 loss on Friday. "Oakton consistently every year gets better as the year goes on. We prepared to play a new team. We knew they would come out hard, prepared and better," Assistant Coach Christina Griel said. "We just made some mistakes today that were detrimental." The Cougars tallied the first goal, which the Wildcats answered with a goal …

Centreville Girls Enter District Playoffs Ranked No. 1

This is the first time in Centreville High School's history that the lacrosse team has entered the Concorde District playoffs ranked so highly.

On Wednesday, May 2, the Centreville High girls lacrosse team advanced to an 11-1 record with a strong 12-9 triumph over their biggest rival, the Westfield Bulldogs. The evening began with a salute to Centreville’s senior players—team captains Hayley Anderson and Maggie Dulkerian, and goalie Ayana Teran—and ended with the Lady Wildcats taking out years of frustration on their old foe. At the initial face off, Westfield made it known that they were in it to win it—CVHS Senior Night or not. However, after allowing two goals and being down by two for the first quarter of the game, Centreville had had enough. Taking the lead in an offensive barrage was junior midfielder, Carly Sane, with five goals, two ground balls, three draw controls, and …

Westfield Girls’ Soccer Finding Its Stride

Stalwart defense leads Bulldogs through Concorde play.

After an 0-1-3 start, Coach Kristi Williams’ Westfield Bulldog varsity soccer team (5-3-3) has won five of its last seven games, including two 8-0 shutouts. The Bulldogs are 3-2 in Concorde play over the last month and look poised to earn a great seed in the upcoming district tournament beginning May 16. Williams noted that they still have one more district game to play, against Oakton High School. “They all matter but that’s the game that really matters," Williams said. "Our focus is preparing as well as we can to play the best in the game, and hopefully getting the results that we want. Hopefully we get the best seed in the tournament and see where it goes from there.” During the recent streak, Williams’ back-line and goalkeeper Shannon …
