'All That Jazz' at Centreville High School

Enjoy live jazz music at Centreville High School during the JazzCats Cafe.

Centreville High School will be filled with the strains of cool jazz May 31, as school's cafeteria becomes the setting for the JazzCats Cafe. The music begins at 7 p.m., with performances by Dave Detwiler & The White House Band, and the CVHS JazzCats. This is the fourth time CVHS has hosted the jazz cafe.  Tickets are $8 in advance, or $10 at the door. To purchase tickets, email jazzcatstix@yahoo.com. Northern Region Honors for CVHS Boys Lacrosse Players

By Karen Fulkerson The Centreville High School varsity boys lacrosse team recently saw multiple players named to both the 2013 Northern Region team, and the 2013 Concorde District team.  Congratulations to the following players named to the 2013 Northern Region team: First team honors: Kainoa O’Connor, Andy Balberde, Antonio Choi and Nathan Marks.  Second team honors: Tyler Vennergrund, Carson McEver, Kyle Richbourg, Pat Lilburn, Logan Wakefield and Pat Prosser.  Honorable mentions: Danny Meador, David Weisbrodt, Sean Doyle, Brett Clark, John Clements, Ben Kandel and Jake Hyde.  Varsity head coaches from the Concorde District member high schools and the Northern Region member high schools vote upon regional team honors and Concorde …

Wildcats to Compete in Track & Field Regional Championships

By Karen Fulkerson At the Concorde District Track and Field Championships at Westfield High School, the following Wildcat athletes qualified for the upcoming regional championships.  Senior Mike Wright won the 200 meter dash and placed second in the 400 meter dash, achieving the state championship qualifying time in both events.  Wright also ran a leg of the second place 4x400 meter relay team. Junior Maryn Wood placed second in the girls’ 400 meter dash. Junior Chase Heiner placed third in the boys’ 1600 meter run, as well as anchoring the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays which also qualified to move on, with the 4x800 reaching the state standard. Sophomore Seo Hee Im advanced to regionals with her fourth place finish in the long jump.  …

CVHS Boys Lacrosse Closes Season With Victory Over Westfield

The Wildcats followed with a playoff victory over the Herndon Hornets, but fell to the Robinson Rams in the Concorde District semifinals.

By Karen Fulkerson The Centreville Varsity Boys Lacrosse Team finished their regular season play with a win at home over cross-town rival Westfield High, 9-7.  Seniors Nathan Marks, Andy Balberde and Tyler Vennergrund each had two goals for the evening. Senior David Weisbrodt had one goal; and freshman Brett Clark had two goals. Lending assists during the game were Tyler Vennergrund, Nick Ziegler and Kyle Richbourg. The Wildcat defense had another extremely solid performance during the competitive game. The man down unit consisting of Antonio Choi, Ben Kandel, Pat Lilburn, Kainoa O'Connor, and Logan Wakefield held Westfield's extra man opportunities at bay. Centreville JV Lacrosse Celebrates Perfect Season

Centreville defeated Westfield 6-5 on the team's final game for the season.

By Karen Fulkerson The Centreville JV boys lacrosse team put a bow on an undefeated season with a 6-5 win over the visiting Westfield Bulldogs on May 1. The first quarter opened with a frenzy of unsettled play as the teams sprinted up and down the field after loose balls.   Westfield managed to score first, but David Shim responded with a Wildcat goal on a great assist from Brendan Shea. Westfield scored twice off drives and clean shots on goal, finishing the first quarter with a two point advantage. Brian Yoo stepped up with a goal for the Wildcats in the second quarter, after taking a pass from John Tarver. The halftime score was 3-3, thanks to a man-up goal by Corey Spriggs, with an assist from Matthew Laurence. The first Wildcat lead …

Liberty Middle School Mourns Loss of Civics Teacher

Rebecca Donlon died unexpectedly Monday.

Liberty Middle School is mourning the loss of eighth-grade civics teacher Rebecca Donlon, who died unexpectedly Monday.  Donlon, an award-winning teacher, had also worked with Centreville High School students as a cheer coach and teacher cadet sponsor.  "Mrs. Donlon was a wonderful and talented teacher who had the ability to make positive connections with each child in her class. She was loved and admired by her colleagues, parents and especially her students," Principal Catherine Cipperly wrote in a message to parents. "We were all privileged to know and work with her since her arrival at Liberty Middle School in 2006, and she will be greatly missed." Centreville Softball Extends Winning Streak

Wildcats defeat Robinson Rams.

Written by Karen Fulkerson The Centreville High School softball team extended its record in Concorde District play to 6-0 by beating the Robinson Rams 5-1 on April 26. Robinson scored first plating its only run of the game in the bottom half of the third inning. The Wildcats responded with four runs in the top of the fifth. Senior first baseman Jenna Sarlouis’ doubled to right-center to drive in Amanda Meny who scored Centreville’s first run. Sarlouis and Macy Luck, who singled and stole a base, scored on a double by Kaleigh Berry. Natalie Hopkins’ sacrifice fly to right field drove in Berry from third. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Morgan Yi drove in Berry who led off the inning with a triple. …

CVHS Tennis Takes Shutout Against Herndon

Strong performance by the Lady Wildcats.

CVHS’ ladies tennis began matches last week playing against Herndon and posted a shutout, 9-0.   On court no. 1, Jamie Schoshinski won 10-5. Carlota Perez-Carpio completed her match in record time winning 10-0. On court no. 3, Kimberly Townsend won handily, beating her opponent 10-2. Rebekah Lee won 10-6 on court no. 4. On court no. 5, Tanya Kumar won 10-5. On court no. 6, Katie Kowalski was focused and ably beat her opponent, winning won 10-3. In doubles, no. 1 team Schoshinski and Perez-Carpio were very aggressive at the net and won 8-3. Townsend and Lee took their match 8-1. Centreville Track Defeats Robinson, Oakton

By Monique King The Centreville girls defeated district rivals Robinson and Oakton in the tri-meet on April 17 with first place finishes by seniors Rebecca Vinter in the 800 meter run and Isabella Medina in the 3200 meter run.  Freshman Sami Belso scored a double victory winning both the 100 meter dash and the high jump. On the boy’s side, Centreville finished in second behind Robinson, but balanced that with quite a few first-place finishes. Seniors Mike Wright and Chan Young Lee achieved victories in the 100 meter dash and the 1600 meter run respectively. The Bishop twins won the 110 meter high hurdles, Kevin, and the 200 meter dash, Michael. Alex Jung won the 800 meter run and last but not least, A.J. Turner won both the long and triple…

Former Top College Softball Player to Speak on Overcoming Tragedy

Former top university softball player Reba Tutt will talk about how she overcame tragedy months after her sister's murder and mother's death.

Former top college softball player Reba Tutt will speak to Centreville High School softball players Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Centreville High School softball field.  The public is invited to attend.
